The causes and signs of humidity in our homes

If you feel that the humidity inside your home is much more than it is outside then it could be because of the following reasons:

  • Poor ventilation
  • Inadequate window seals
  • Poorly ventilated bathrooms
  • Leaking pipes- sinks and toilets
  • Laundry machines and dryers
  • Hot showers
  • Steam from cooking and ironing
  • Rain and roof leakage
  • Indoor plants

Condensation also forms in places where circulation is very less like under your bed and dressers. In fact, some rooms are prone to trapped moisture- attics, basements, and poorly ventilated bathrooms.

You can identify the level of humidity in your home by noticing certain signs such as:

  • Musty smells
  • Mildew
  • Allergies- watery or dry eyes, cough
  • Spots of mold growth in corners or on the ceiling
  • Condensation on the panes of windows and doors
  • Puddles or wet spots in basements, attics or crawl spaces

If you live in an area surrounded by lush greenery and plants, it creates more opportunity for high humidity. You can even use a hygrometer to check and monitor the level of humidity within your house. A hygrometer is a device that measures the amount of moisture in the air. This device usually comes coupled with a thermostat since temperature also plays a big part in the humidity level in the room.

The optimum humidity levels indoors should be between 30% and 50%. If the humidity in your home is higher than 50% and you are not interested in investing in a dehumidifier then here are some natural solutions for you. Needless to say, that these solutions are cost-saving and simple.

Vent your home

Improving the ventilation in your home is perhaps the simplest and cheapest way to reduce humidity. All you have to do is open the windows and doors as frequently as possible. You can even install fans and extraction fans in problem areas which are susceptible to high humidity. Install such fans in the kitchen, bathroom, and attic.

Use rock salt

Rock salt absorbs moisture from the surrounding air which decreases the humidity levels. As such, it is a highly effective dehumidifier. It is a hygroscopic material which is why it is able to draw water from the atmosphere and store it. It does work like an electric dehumidifier. Using rock salt is really beneficial for you since it is easily available, simple to use, cheap, natural and non-toxic and it doesn’t need electricity to work.

What you need: 1 bag of rock salt and 2 five-gallon buckets.

How to use it:

  • Make some holes with a drill in the sides and bottom of one of the buckets.
  • Place this bucket inside the other bucket (one without the holes) and pour in the rock salt into the top bucket.
  • Place the buckets all around the area to start dehumidifying your home. The rock salt will pull the moisture from the air which will collect in the bottom bucket. Throw away the liquid and replace the rock salt to start dehumidifying the area again.

Use baking soda

Baking soda is another inexpensive, homemade, and energy-free dehumidifier. It is a great alternative to store-bought products. Place open-bowls of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) everywhere in your house that needs to be dehumidified. You can even place them inside cupboards, closets, and cabinets.

While it may not be as effective as rock salt, it still can dehumidify smaller areas like the closed cupboards and cabinets. You will need to stir up the baking soda occasionally once it begins absorbing moisture from the room.

Water marks or rings appearing on your wall are the signs of leaky pipe somewhere in your house. Get a plumber to investigate it because leaks are also responsible for increasing humidity levels. Be sure to check all the pipes for any cracks or any loose faucets. However, when you notice water stains on your ceilings, then it means that water is coming in through the roof or gutters.

Don’t take long showers

In most homes, the bathroom is the biggest source of humidity, especially the showers. While taking showers ensure that your ventilation fans are on and running. You should even leave the doors and windows of your bathroom open for at least 30 minutes after taking a shower. But, if you shorten the time you spend taking a shower, you can really reduce the amount of moisture which gets released in your home.

Instead of using a dryer machine line your clothes out to dry. Although, sometimes it is necessary to use a dryer, especially if it is raining, in which case you should make sure that it is fully vented. A condenser dryer is much better, since it traps most of the moisture in an internal reservoir.

Switch to using dry heat sources wherever possible in your home. As efficient as gas central heating is, it can intensify the humidity in your already humid home. You can warm the air in your home while keeping it dry at the same time by using a wood-burning stove or space heater.

Dri-Z-Air is yet another easily available at your nearest hardware store product which is cost-effective as well. It also contains crystals which absorb the excess humidity from the air. These crystals are made up of non-toxic calcium chloride. This product doesn’t need electricity to work and each individual unit works well for a 10’ x 10’ area.

Simply empty the crystals into the container (made of recycled plastic) which is provided or you can even make one of your own. Store container of crystals someplace where it won’t be moved around frequently. Once the moisture collects in the container, dump the liquid in a toilet or sewer and replenish the crystals.

How to use it:

  • Line a colander with vinyl screen and fill it with Dri-Z-Air.
  • Place this colander into a larger bowl or bucket so that the moisture collected by the crystals gets deposited in the bowl or bucket.
  • Once the crystals are all liquefied pour out the contents from the bowl or bucket and repeat the process once again with some new crystals.

It’s also important to not go over bored with your dehumidifying measure since a moderate amount of humidity is desirable in a home. Take only the necessary steps and keep monitoring the humidity levels in your home to create a confortable and cozy living environment.
